Research Visit

About the Activity

The Team from the Biomedical Engineering Simulation and Testing Lab at Swansea University had a great few days in Galway last week visiting Boston Scientific to discuss our current project on heart valves as well as future collaboration opportunities.

David O'Connor presented his recent digital image correlation (DIC) measurements on heart valves and the development of this test platform aiming to complement computational modelling and device design activities. The team (Raoul Van Loon, David O'Connor, Casey Smith and Hari Arora) very much enjoyed the welcoming and intellectually stimulating environment. The talks, tours, laboratory demonstrations and hands on practicals opened our eyes to the full workflow and how each team is driving forward, contributing to a common goal in advancing technology all to improve the quality of patient care. The knowledge and passion shared by all was brilliant to see.

The team also presented on wider capabilities and areas of expertise from within the lab and Swansea University in experimental mechanics, manufacturing and material characterisation, computational modelling and machine learning. We are excited about the next steps in our project but also the wide range of opportunities for the lab and wider research teams at Science and Engineering at Swansea University to contribute collaboratively on this fascinating research area. Ewa Klusak and colleagues at Boston Scientific hosted and facilitated such a productive and enjoyable visit. This visit was supported by the Taith fund enabling ECRs and academics within the research group to gain this valuable experience with industry. We are all looking forward to growing this collaboration and seeing the new opportunities for research impact develop in the coming years.
