The Space

The BEST Lab is housed on Swansea University's Bay Campus. It has a flexible space for interdisciplinary researchers to grow ideas through from concept through to manufacture, instrumentation and testing alongside advanced computational mechanics, machine learning and data analytics workflows, and vice versa.

Lab Facilities

Researchers start with a concept, create a design using mathematical expressions, medical images, image segmentations, 3d scan data or CAD (geometric or organic).

Design & Image Analysis

Complex designs can be made using additive manufacturing, casting and other techniques. Sensors can be assembled to monitor force, pressure, strain, temperature etc.

Instrumentation

Physical measurements are required to characterize materials and devices. Tests range from standard solid mechanical testing to bespoke fluid mechanical systems.

Biomechanical Testing

Techniques such as high-speed photography, digital image/volume correlation, ultrasound, microscopy & particle image velocimetry are used to characterize flows and structures.
