About the Activity
The British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM) celebrated its 60th anniversary with a special showcase event hosted at Airbus, bringing together members from across the globe to mark this significant milestone in the Society’s history.
The day featured expert talks covering a broad range of experimental mechanics techniques. Attendees were treated to a tour of Airbus facilities, including the impressive Wing of Tomorrow test programme, and observed live demonstrations of both small-specimen and full-scale fatigue and static testing campaigns.
A display of historical artefacts and a photography competition and exhibition ran throughout the day, fostering opportunities to reflect on the Society’s evolution. Ample time was also set aside for networking, connecting colleagues from academia and industry alike.
Members of the BEST Lab (Tom Pritchard, Meg McNammee, Michael Darcy, Charlie Milnes, and Katerina Katsouli) joined the celebration alongside the delegation from Cardiff University.
The event opened with a welcome address from Dr Hari Arora, marking his final act as Chair of the BSSM. His remarks helped set the tone for a day focused on both celebrating the Society’s rich history and looking ahead to future challenges and innovations.
It was a truly memorable occasion to honour the BSSM’s legacy and connect with the vibrant community shaping its future.
