Active Lung Surrogate

This work is focused on the controlled manufacture and testing of micro- and macro-scale lung phantoms mimicking health and disease. A range of manufacturing methods including additive manufacturing are used to create the geometries. Computational models are used to optimize design parameters in terms of both structural and fluid mechanical properties. Bespoke electrical control systems are used to actively control the lung phantoms under spontaneous breathing and varying degrees of forced mechanical ventilation. Work conducted by Louis Giron, PhD Thesis 2025, funded by EPSRC.
